"New Ideas for New Drugs"

Wall Street Journal (12/28/88), P. A6

Abstract: Some of the people who have worked most closely with the drug approval system are joining the cAUse of reforming it, says the Wall Street Journal, which notes it has called for reform for some three years. On Jan. 4, the National Committee to Review Current Procedures for Approval of New Drugs for Cancer and AIDS, a George Bush creation, will hold its first meeting. Nobel Prize winner Gertrude Elion, who will serve on the commission with fellow Nobel winner George Hitchings, says AIDS "may be the first break in the armor of federal regulations, and I believe it could lead to quicker release for drugs against cancer." The defenders of the status quo should explain to AIDS and other patients why they should risk participating in studies in which they may only get a placebo. A cornerstone of new FDA policy may be risk vs. benefit, a concept understood by anyone in pain or whose life is in danger. The Journal says the scientists and regulators in the U.S. research establishment are rediscovering that their primary task is to serve the sick.
