"Cutbacks, AIDS Emphasis, Seen Slowing Cancer Fight"

Washington Post (12/28/88), P. A1
Okie, Susan

Abstract: At a time when scientific work on the biology of cancer cells seems about to yield major advances, budget cuts, hiring freezes, and the emphasis on AIDS may slow the fight against cancer. Cancer strikes about 1 million Americans each year and kills almost half a million. At the National Cancer Institute (NCI), many top researchers have moved to the private sector, and 243 of NCI's approximately 2200 workers have been assigned to AIDS research rather than cancer. In the coming fiscal year, only 25 percent of cancer research projects approved by review committees will receive funding, compared to 60 percent in the mid-1970s. Leading NCI researchers, including Robert C. Young, say they have left becAUse they felt unable to direct important national programs with the staff and resources available. Dr. Maryann Roper, NCI's acting deputy director, says, "It seems to me there should be an equally vocal cry from the population for cancer [research] as there is for AIDS." Roper says many young researchers are abandoning cancer research for AIDS research becAUse money is more readily available for AIDS-related projects.
