"A Time for Living"

San Francisco Examiner (12/18/88), P. 22
Fallon, D'Arcy

Sister Mary Martha Agellar, Brother Tolbert McCarroll, and Sister Julian DeRossi--Sister Marti, Brother Toby, and Sister Juli--are the caretakers at the Starcross Monastery in California's Sonoma Valley, lay Catholic monastery where children with AIDS find a home. The monastery's philosophy is, no matter how short, life is beAUtiful and worth living. Four children now live with them. Many children with AIDS, who often die by the age of 2, move into San Francisco medical foster homes. But they are filling up, and the founders of Starcross believes babies with AIDS should not spend the little time they have shuffled through foster homes and hospitals. They started their "Morning Glory Program" two years ago, despite problems with local officials who threatened to cancel their child-care license. The Starcross family's life, already disrupted by the publicity over the monastery, will be further complicated by a Victorian house in Santa Rosa that will provide support to families who have adopted children with AIDS. They also plan other AIDS-related services. Sister Marti says it started out as "this simple thing we could do, which was provide a home for a few children."
