Abstract: Health ministers of the 12 Common Market Nations issued an official statement last week calling HIV testing of employees "unjustified" and "not an appropriate measure in the fight against AIDS." The memo, issued in the middle of a growing business controversy, urged employers to make clear to their workers that HIV-positive people "do not constitute a risk for their work colleagues." Workers who develop AIDS, the ministers said, "must be treated on the same basis as workers affected by other serious illnesses." Employers should protect them "from all condemnation and discrimination." The European Community itself recently dropped a plan for pre-employment testing.
