"Inmate with AIDS Virus Charged with Attempted Homicide"

United Press International (12/21/88)

Abstract: Bellefonte, Pa.--State police have charged an HIV-positive Philadelphia man with attempted homicide, aggravated assAUlt, simple assAUlt, assAUlt by a prisoner, and harassment for reportedly defecating in a cup and throwing its contents in the face of a guard at the State Correctional Institution at Rockview in Centre County. William Brown, who is serving a three-to-seven year sentence for retail theft and aggravated assAUlt, reportedly attacked the guard Nov. 6. A state police statement said, "This action was an attempt on the part of the accused to transmit a contagious fatal virus." State Health Department Epidemiologist Dr. Bobby Jones said the chances of the guard contracting HIV from the incident are "zero." A prison spokesman said prison policy prevented revealing the guard's name or whether he had been tested for HIV antibodies.
