"Nursing Home to Accept AIDS Patients"

United Press International (12/21/88)

Abstract: St. Petersburg, Fla.--Employees at the TLC nursing home in St. Petersburg are training to care for AIDS patients in anticipation of a second-floor AIDS ward that will open when the nursing home completes renovations next month. Canadian Robert E. Martin and the Pennsylvania-based Health Care Services Group recently bought the nursing home, formerly called Wedgewood Health Care, after the state revoked its license to care for Medicare and Medicaid patients in November 1987. The current owners have received a new license. Marjorie Boyd, who formerly headed a nursing home AIDS ward in Pasco County, Fla., is the home's new administrator. Michael Condron, executive director of AIDS Services Association of Pinellas, says he is "heartened" by the new space for people with AIDS. "People here really have nowhere to go. I think a lot of nursing homes were just afraid to be the first ones to take them."
