"AIDS is Reported as No. 9 CAUse of Death Among Children 1 to 4"

Among children aged one to four, AIDS has become the ninth leading cAUse of death, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Deputy Director Dr. Antonia Novello reported yesterday. Among people aged 15-24, the disease ranks seventh. AIDS has been reported in 1291 infants and children under 13 and in 325 of those 13 to 19. Of the first group, 717 have died; of the second, 174. Novello says that for every child who meets the Centers for Disease Control AIDS definition, 2-10 others are HIV-positive. In a report to Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Otis R. Bowen, Novello noted that current estimates for 1991 are for between 10,000 and 20,000 HIV-infected children. BecAUse the current group of Americans aged 11-24 "is unusually small to begin with," she said, "If AIDS were to make serious inroads in this group, the long-term consequences could be disasterous for the nation's economy.
