"AIDS Discrimination Pervasive, Attorney Says"
United Press International (12/09/88)
WeinrAUb, Lori K.
Arlington, Va.--The pervasiveness of AIDS discrimination is demonstrated by a northern Virginia company's refusal to rent office space to a clinic that helps people with the disease, says Kennth Labowitz, an attorney who is representing the Whitman-Walker Clinic in a suit against C.J. Coakley, Inc. of Merrifield, Va. The clinic signed a valid lease and paid a deposit to rent office space from Coakley, says Labowitz. Coakley reportedly is afraid of losing other tenants and claims there is reason to believe the lease may not be valid. Whitman-Walker, which has a contract with the Virginia Department of Health to provide educational and counseling services for people with AIDS in northern Virginia, planned to occupy the office space on Dec. 1. Circuit Court Judge William Winston set a Dec. 28 hearing date to determine the validity of the lease. A Mrs. Coakley of the rental company refused his offer to work with her and explain AIDS issues to the other tenants, said the Clinic's PAUl Wirhun.
