"Prescriptions for the Here and Now"

Advocate (12/20/88), P. 62
Bean, Joseph W.

Novelist PAUl Reed's world is the world of gay men in the age of AIDS, a world of tragic circumstances and unfortunate situations that also has love, hope, and the possibility of transcendance, writes the Advocate's Joseph W. Bean. Reed wrote the first AIDS novel, "Facing It," in 1982-83, followed by "How to Convince Your Lover to Wear Condoms and Why You Should." Next, came "Serenity," eight essays about coping with the fear of AIDS. Now he has published "Longing." The novel, set in the mid-1980s, shows characters who are on the border between sunny, eager innocence and the chilling shadow of AIDS. "Longing" is about one man's spiritual journey, but is also the story of the gay community. For Reed, who has been diagnosed with ARC, "Longing," appears to complete a cycle that started with the first novel: from recognition of AIDS, through practical and psychological defenses, and on to a spiritual triumph.
