Abstract: As in the U.S., AIDS organizations in Europe have had a difficult time reaching consensus on what advice to give gay men about anal sex. The Swiss AIDS Foundation advocates condom use, and even started its own condom production and distribution firm, Hot Rubber Co. Their campaign has brought about an increase in condom use and a decrease in anal sex. In the Netherlands, however, an AIDS group distributes a card that lists safe and unsafe practices--it simply says, "Don't fuck." For those who insist on anal sex, the card says advises gays to use a brand of condoms developed specifically for gay sex. Washington, D.C.'s Whitman-Walker Clinic has taken out full-page ads in the "Washington Blade," encouraging condom use but also suggesting that gay men consider avoiding anal sex. The Advocate's Michael Helquist congratulates the clinic for puting advertising aimed at gay men in mainstream publications, but says the group should focus on behavior change and not the "undue moralism" of ads that attack gay sexuality.
