"France Boosts AIDS Funds"

Science (11/11/88) Vol. 242, No. 4880, P. 862
Dickson, David

France announced early this month that it will spend $25 million on AIDS in 1989, a figure that brings it in line with spending with countries such as Britain and West Germany. In announcing the new funds, Health Minister ClAUde Evin said, "both health needs, and the industrial and scientific stakes, mean that it is now essential to move into a higher gear." The funding will include a four-fold increase, to $16 million, in AIDS prevention programs and the establishment of a new 15-member National AIDS Committee to oversee those programs and to offer advice on the types of treatment to be offered to HIV-positive people. Evin said that France intends the new impetus to become part of a larger European effort. Pasteur Institute researcher Luc Montagnier, a vocal critic of government underfunding, said "this is a very welcome increase, even if the total amount is still not very large compared to the U.S. effort."
