"Salk Institute's President, F. de Hoffmann, Resigns"

Wall Street Journal (11/21/88), P. A11A

The president of the Salk Institute, a biological research institution, resigned recently after he revealed he is infected with the AIDS virus. Frederic de Hoffmann, who has served the Institute since 1970, was diagnosed as positive for the HIV virus several weeks ago, according to an institute spokeswoman. She said de Hoffmann was infected as a result of a comtaminated blood transfusion he received during coronary bypass surgery in 1984. The operation was performed before there was widespread testing for the blood supply. De Hoffmann will continue to act as president emeritus and will remain as a trustee for the institute, which is headed by polio vaccine pioneer Dr. Jonas Salk. The Salk Institute is presently developing potential vaccines to combat AIDS.
