"Panel to Study Expediting Drug Development Process"

Bay Area Reporter (12/29/88) Vol. 18, No. 52, P. 13

Abstract: The goal of a new national committee established by the President's Cancer Panel is to undertake a systematic study of drug regulation as it affects available AIDS and cancer therapies and to suggest improvements in the system, according to Dr. Thomas Merigan of Stanford University's School of Medicine. Merigan, one of nine members of the National Committee to Review Current Procedures for Approval of New Drugs, says the efficiency of drug testing must be improved without compromising the rigor and quality of the drug evaluation process. Dr. Louis Lasagna of Tufts University is chairman of the commission, which will include representatives from the academic and industry communities. Merigan says that in the face of the recent Food and Drug Administration to fast-track some AIDS therapies, "the question is, do we want to change the system even more radically?" George Bush, whose Presidential Task Force on Regulatory Relief initiated the idea of the commission, also wants it to examine the appropriate endpoints for determining the effectiveness of new treatments, and the latitude researchers should have in modifying approved investigational protocols.
