UNAIDS (Geneva) - November 29, 2001

Soccer legend Roger Milla has been appointed Ambassador for UNAIDS to help fight the AIDS epidemic, especially among young men.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for me to fight for the causes in which I believe," said Mr Milla at a press conference with UNAIDS. "Africa is bearing the brunt of the epidemic. As a Cameroonian, it is my duty to do what I can for Africa and its youth."

Mr Milla will focus on prevention among young African men. Worldwide, some 11.8 million young people aged 15-24 are infected with HIV, and 8.6 million of them are in Africa.

"Young people are at the heart of the epidemic," said Kathleen Cravero, Deputy Executive Director of UNAIDS.

According to "AIDS Epidemic Update 2001", young people are particularly ill-informed about the epidemic and millions do not have the information they need in order to prevent becoming infected. In more than a dozen affected countries, according to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), more than half the young people have not even heard of AIDS or harbour serious misconceptions about the disease.
