County supervisors honored the program with an emotional ceremony Tuesday, San Mateo Medical Center spokesman Dave Hook said. The program is a joint effort between the medical center and the county health department, and began with a prevention effort in 1985. A treatment component was added in 1988, according to Dr. Dennis Israelski, the program's medical director.
Today, the program offers integrated treatment, advocacy, education, substance-abuse treatment and other services to 600 active clients, of whom 350 are full-time patients utilizing the "full package," Israelski said. The program has 30 medical trials ongoing, and has offered every single AIDS medication approved by the FDA prior to that approval in the form of trials, he added.
"I really do think we give one of the best services for people living with HIV in the Bay Area," Israelski said.
