Today is the first time San Francisco pharmacies are able to sell syringes without a prescription, under a new law passed by the Board of Supervisors last month. Under the law, pharmacies registered with The City's program may sell up to 10 syringes to an adult without a prescription, and will also provide those patients with information on accessing drug treatment and HIV/AIDS testing, as well as free containers for safe disposal of used syringes.
Supervisors take up issue of civil service
The supervisors' Committee on Government Audit and Oversight took up civil service issues Monday, hearing from a string of labor leaders who have officially protested to Mayor Gavin Newsom that The City has met directly with employees instead of their chosen union representatives. During a hearing that stretched into the evening, many suggested that working better within the existing system could improve efficiency in hiring as well as on-the-job training and performance.
Director of Human Resources Phil Ginsburg said he wants to cut the current six-month hiring process in half by working with the Civil Service Commission to cut down on-the-job classifications, among other steps.
Ethics Department's budget improves
Ethics commissioners have just been told by Director John St. Croix that the small department is, for the first time ever, at or ahead of budget this year in terms of revenues generated. With nearly three months to go, the figure is roughly $178,500, or $1,500 higher than the fiscal year target.
Jet-fuel measure moves forward
Assemblyman Leland Yee announced that his bill to bring more jet-fuel tax revenue to the communities surrounding airports was approved by the Assembly Committee on Revenue and Taxation on Monday, raising hopes that $3 million a year could eventually be headed back to San Francisco and San Mateo counties. Yee said his bill closes a loophole that has allowed airlines to set up cheaper deals outside their area of operations.
