WHAT: Media briefing conference call on recommendations from AIDS community leaders to President-elect Obama on actions he and his Administration can take in the first 100 days of office to improve the domestic HIV/AIDS situation, including initiating a National AIDS Strategy.
WHEN: Tues., Nov. 25, 11 a.m. EST
HOW: Conference Call in Number: 888-566-8440, Participant Access Code: 757100#
WHY: With World AIDS Day on December 1, now is an appropriate time to focus attention on the domestic HIV/AIDS epidemic. The urgency is underscored by the CDC's estimate released this year that the number of new infections per year is more than 55,000, or 40 percent higher than previous estimates. During the campaign, President-elect Obama committed to focus on HIV/AIDS, including formulating a National AIDS Strategy, emphasizing evidence-based prevention programs and committing greater funding.
"AIDS In America," an umbrella coalition of national HIV/AIDS organizations, compiled and sent to the Obama-Biden Transition Team a set of recommended actions that call for a renewed focus on the domestic epidemic and ways in which HIV prevention, care and treatment, and research can be improved in the United States.
The media briefing will explain the AIDS In America recommendations and allow questions to participating principals.
