WASHINGTON, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- President Bush has called for passage of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Modernization Act. He endorsed passing the Act most recently a week ago, Dec. 1, World AIDS Day.
"As Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Rep. Joe Barton (TX) has failed his responsibility to bring this to the House floor for a vote, following this week's successful vote by unanimous consent in the Senate. His decision to block reauthorization of the CARE Act shows outright disregard and disrespect for those among our country's most marginalized, the more than a half million people in the United States living with HIV/AIDS served by the Care Act," said Rebecca Haag, Executive Director, AIDS Action Council.
"We held a news briefing yesterday with U.S. Representatives supporting the reauthorization of the Ryan White CARE Act, along with other AIDS organizations, and the call for action by the House is clear, urgent but so far unanswered. The House must pass the bill before it adjourns," she added.
Attending yesterday's news conference were Representatives Edolphus Towns (NY), Maxine Waters (CA), Albert Wynn (MD), Loretta Sanchez (CA) and Tammy Baldwin (WI) and Delegates Donna Christensen (VI) and Madeleine Bordallo (GU). They were joined by representatives of AIDS Action Council; AIDS Alliance for Children, Youth and Families; The AIDS Institute; Human Rights Campaign; the National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors; the National Minority AIDS Council; Washington DC Administration for HIV Policy and Programs and the Whitman-Walker Clinic. The National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS prepared a written statement in support.
