amfAR's Founding National Chairman, Dr. Mathilde Krim, who will share experiences from a career in HIV/AIDS research, will join Cole, who becomes Chairman of amfAR's Board of Directors at the beginning of the year. News anchor Ann Curry of "The Today Show" will introduce these honorees:
* Dr. Ruth Ruprecht, Professor of Medicine at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, credited with developing drug therapies to reduce mother-to-child transmission of HIV;
* Dr. Vickie Mays, Clinical Psychologist and Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles, among the first to demonstrate that African-American and Latino women in the U.S. have disproportionately higher rates of HIV infection than white women;
* Dr. Wafaa El-Sadr, Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Harlem Hospital and Professor of Clinical Medicine and Epidemiology at Columbia University, whose clinical expertise bridges her work with expectant mothers all over the world with her practice at Harlem Hospital.
Worldwide, women comprise nearly half of those infected with HIV. In the United States, where women represent one in three new HIV infections, the proportion of infections among women has more than tripled since 1986. Honoring these researchers is part of an expanded program amfAR created earlier this year on women's sexual health and HIV/AIDS.
Kenneth Cole has been a member of amfAR's Board of Directors since 1987 and has served as its Vice Chairman since 2002. He has designed and executed amfAR's well-known public service campaigns over the years with the goal of helping to stimulate thought and action about HIV/AIDS. As Chairman and CEO of Kenneth Cole Productions, he is widely recognized for his accomplishments as a fashion designer, innovative marketer and for his leadership and originality in corporate philanthropy.
The American Foundation for AIDS Research is the leading U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to the support of AIDS research, AIDS prevention, treatment education, and the advocacy of sound AIDS-related public policy. Since 1985, amfAR has invested over $220 million in its programs and has awarded grants to more than 2,000 research teams worldwide.
