AHFC Receives $731,172 in Federal Homeless Grants

PRNewswire - December 31, 2003

ANCHORAGE, Dec. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Alaska Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC) will receive a total of $731,172 from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD). Two renewal grant awards will continue the Shelter+Care program started in Anchorage in 1996. The funds are passed through to AHFC's project sponsors, Anchorage Community Mental Health a.k.a. Southcentral Counseling Center ($125,448) and Alaskan AIDS Assistance Association ($23,724), to provide rental assistance for homeless persons with disabilities. These two projects serve an estimated 18 to 20 households per year.

AHFC will also receive $582,000 to add two new Shelter+Care programs in Anchorage and the Mat-Su Borough. During the initial five-year grant term, the project sponsor, Valley Residential Services expects to serve a minimum of six households annually and Alaskan AIDS Assistance Association will serve an additional five.

In addition to rental assistance, project sponsors are required to match the Shelter+Care grants with supportive services of equal or greater value, such as case management, health care, transportation, and/or behavioral health services.

According to HUD, the awards were part of the largest award of homeless assistance in the nation's history -- more than $1.27 billion to fund thousands of local housing and service programs around the country.

AHFC is a self-supporting public corporation with offices in 15 communities statewide. It provides financing for multi-family complexes, congregate facilities, and single-family homes, with special loan programs for low- and moderate-income borrowers, veterans, and those living in rural areas of the state. It also provides energy and weatherization programs; low-income rental housing; and special programs for the homeless and those seeking to become self-sufficient. AHFC contributes more than $100 million annually to Alaska's state revenues through cash transfers, capital projects and debt-service payments.
