With 870 stores, Pep is using its formidable store and distribution network to help the cause this World AIDS Day (December 1st, 2003). By declaring all its stores as 'drop-off points', Pep will become a national hub for the deposit and collection of any donations (except food) for AIDS charities and AIDS orphanages. Pep will then collect the donations from all stores each week for a fortnight, transport them to its five distribution centres for onward delivery to a nominated list of around 30 local AIDS charities and orphanages. Pep, which regularly supports AIDS clinics and charities, also gives a percentage of profits on all promotion items sold during the week in which World AIDS Day falls.
From 24 November until 6 December, anyone who has anything but food to donate for AIDS victims and AIDS orphans, can drop off the items in specially marked boxes at any Pep store in the country. If ten people per day per store donated one item for the twelve shopping days of the initiative, over 100 000 gifts would go to AIDS victims and orphans. If the average cost of each of the items donated is, say, R10, this equates to over a million Rand's worth of gifts.
The distribution initiative is being supported by an awareness drive on three national SABC radio stations - Metro, SAfm and RSG - in order to reach around five million listeners. Worth around R150 000, the radio campaign aims to inform the public of how they can help give to AIDS charities this World AIDS Day.
Managing director of Pep, Andr Labuschaigne says: "We have an award-winning distribution system. We have staff who are enthusiastic and committed to helping this project succeed at national and local level. If Pep only meets the minimum target of delivering 100 000 gifts, we will have mounted an extremely worthwhile initiative and one that can be repeated and expanded in years to come."
