BET Plans Special World AIDS Day Programming: Network's Popular News and Music Programming to Promote Public Awareness; Documentary Special to Focus on HIV/AIDS Issues Facing African-American Women

PRNewswire - November 25, 2003

WASHINGTON, Nov. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- BET today announced its plans to provide special programming to coincide with World AIDS Day, which will be commemorated globally on Monday, December 1. The cable network will televise HIV-related programs and public service announcements (PSAs) throughout the day that are geared to educate teens, young adults and African-Americans about a disease that has drastically impacted the urban community.

On Monday, December 1 at 4:00 p.m. ET/PT, BET's RAP CITY: THA BASSMENT kicks off the series of programming with a special two-hour episode hosted by Big Tigger, who discusses important HIV testing information with musical guests G-Unit. The network's top-rated music countdown show, 106 & PARK: BET'S TOP 10 LIVE follows at 6:00 p.m. with a "live" telecast hosted by AJ & Free. This special show will feature celebrity guests Alicia Keys and Wyclef Jean, and health experts discussing the impact of HIV/AIDS on young people. BET.com's Celebrity Charity Auction and the Rap-It-Up Film Competition will also be announced during the live telecast.

BET NIGHTLY NEWS will take an in-depth look at HIV/AIDS and the African- American community in a special segment hosted by news anchor Jacque Reid at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT. BET's THE NAKED TRUTH 2 poignantly concludes the special programming series at 11:30 p.m. with an up-close look at HIV/AIDS and African-American women. Produced and directed by Michael Joyner, this NAACP Image Award-winning documentary explores the issues of HIV/AIDS, morality and sexuality through the personal and emotional journey of six African-American women who are either affected by or infected with the deadly disease.

Additional network efforts for World AIDS Day include a celebrity charity auction and Rap-It-Up Film Competition. BET.com will launch its 2004 Celebrity Charity auction to increase awareness of Rap-It-Up, BET's award- wining HIV/AIDS public affairs initiative, and to raise funds to support HIV/AIDS organizations. On December 1, BET will begin requesting items from celebrities to be auctioned off on BET.com. The on-line auction will officially start on December 15 and close on February 6, 2004, the eve of National Black AIDS Awareness Day. Auction proceeds will benefit Outreach Inc., an HIV/AIDS services organization in Atlanta.

BET will also unveil its first Rap-It-Up Film Competition in conjunction with the Black AIDS Institute to focus on AIDS awareness in the African- American community using short-subject films. All entries will be judged by a special panel, with three finalists each receiving $10,000 towards the production of the chosen short films. The selected films will televise on the BET network around National HIV Testing Day, which is June 27, 2004.
