Primagen's Mitox Tests for Mitochondrial Toxicity Highlighted In Presentations at the HIV-1 DART Conference

PRNewswire - December 18, 2002

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Primagen today presented new pre-clinical data on its proprietary Mitox tests at the HIV-1 DART conference in Florida, where frontiers in drug development for antiretroviral therapies are discussed among the worlds best drug developers and scientists.

Primagen's Mitox tests measure both mitochondrial DNA and RNA in relation to mitochondrial toxicity related disease caused by HIV-1 treatment.

"The research in understanding mitochondrial toxicity caused by HIV-1 antiviral treatment is progressing rapidly, and our Mitox tests play an important role in that research" says Bob van Gemen, Chief Executive Officer of Primagen. "While the clinical research community and pharmaceutical companies expand their research efforts on mitochondrial toxicity we have perfected our mitochondrial DNA and RNA tests as indispensable tools for this work. Optimal technical performance of our tests will pave the way for scientific and clinical results that identify mitochondrial DNA and RNA as diagnostic markers with high predictive value."

"We are setting the standard if it comes to measurement of mitochondrial DNA and RNA. With our unique duplex tests that detect and quantify both chromosomal and mitochondrial nucleic acid in one reaction we have achieved unsurpassed accurateness and throughput," continues Van Gemen. "Our current collaborations with major pharmaceutical companies and research institutes prove that we are on the right track."

The presentation at the HIV-1 DART conference in Florida, highlighted the technical performance of the mitochondrial nucleic acid quantification tests of Primagen and discussed the clinical implications and predictive value of the assays. Mitochondrial nucleic acid appears to be a marker for antiviral efficacy of the therapy, balanced with the adverse effects of therapy due to mitochondrial toxicity. Mitox can become an important tool in the management of patient therapy in predicting toxicity, on the basis of which modifications of therapy can be considered and adverse clinical symptoms can possibly be avoided, thereby improving the individual patient's quality of life.
