At the occasion of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial in Doha, Qatar, leading American research-based pharmaceutical companies take this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to strengthening public-private sector partnerships in the fight against infectious disease, including HIV/AIDS.
As a result of the HIV/AIDS crisis, particularly in Africa and other developing regions, world leaders are now focused on the fundamental relationship between health and development, particularly as the HIV/AIDS pandemic threatens to reverse the economic gains that have been made over the past decades. The role and contribution of the global trading system, and its contribution to public health, have become an important topic in the dialogue on health and development.
As global leaders in research and development, we are committed to continued and intensified R&D into the discovery and development of new medications for infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS, to the improvement of public health, and access to our medicines for all patients who need them.
We know, however, that improving access involves more than just improving the affordability and accessibility of medicines: the most important factors for long-term sustainability are strengthening healthcare infrastructure and additional financing.
We reiterate our unwavering commitment to do our part in improving access to healthcare and medicines to poor countries, through a number of partnerships including ones with UN agencies, other private sector companies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
Sustainable solutions to tackling major global health problems in the developing world will come from comprehensive, targeted approaches that draw on the complementary expertise of all stakeholders.
