Serologicals Corporation to Participate in Centers for Disease Control's HIV/HCV Risk Factor Study

PRNewswire - Monday November 20, 2000

ATLANTA, Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Serologicals Corporation (Nasdaq: SERO - news) today announced that it has been selected to participate in a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) HIV/HCV (Hepatitis C) Risk Factor Study. The CDC, in collaboration with Boston Biomedica, Inc. (Nasdaq: BMII - news) seeks to analyze the risk behavior characteristics of infected donors in order to improve the donor screening and deferral process. Toby Simon, M.D., vice president of Medical and Scientific Affairs at Serologicals, will serve as a co-investigator and will assist with protocol development, donor recruitment and data analysis. Through its 17 specialty-antibody donation centers located throughout the country, Serologicals will identify and recruit individuals who are deferred from the donation process because of their HIV or HCV positive status.

David A. Dodd, president and chief executive officer of Serologicals Corporation, said, ``The request by the study's sponsors that Serologicals Corporation participate in this important study reflects our demonstrated ability to identify and recruit qualified donors and effectively manage the donation process. Also, Dr. Simon, a leading expert in the blood and plasma donation process and a former president of the American Association of Blood Banks, will add significant experience and insight to the study.''

Serologicals Corporation, headquartered in Atlanta, is a leading worldwide provider of biological materials and services to pharmaceutical and life science companies. The company provides value-added antibody-based products that are used as the active ingredients in therapeutic products for the treatment and management of diseases such as Rh incompatibility in newborns, rabies and hepatitis and in diagnostic products such as blood typing reagents and diagnostic test kits.
