Internet Effective in Improving Patients' Compliance to Drug Treatment Schedules; Cyber Dialogue Study Suggests Avenues for Tackling Enduring Healthcare Challenge

PRNewswire - December 21, 1999

NEW YORK, Dec. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The Internet provides powerful tools to help increase treatment compliance among people with chronic conditions, according to findings released today by Cyber Dialogue. Data from Cyber Dialogue's Cybercitizen Health survey of American adults found that one-third of chronic disease sufferers who seek disease information online report taking their medications more regularly following a visit to a disease-specific Web site.

Poor compliance to prescribed medications has been a major problem in healthcare for decades, particularly among patients with chronic conditions such as heart disease, HIV infection, depression, and hypertension. Industry- standard studies have confirmed that 30-70 percent of prescription medications are not properly administered, leaving thousands of patients under-treated, while adversely affecting insurance costs and pharmaceutical sales.

"The Internet has the power to change the concept of 'Take as Directed' by improving patients' understanding of the importance of compliance," said Thaddeus Grimes-Gruczka, vice president of Cyber Dialogue's Health Group. "Previous efforts to improve compliance had limited success, but new options such as email reminders and online health management programs can provide the support and privacy patients demand, while also allowing insurance and drug companies to save money through effective targeting."

Cybercitizen Health's study also revealed that 54 percent of chronic disease sufferers who seek disease information online reported asking their doctor about a particular treatment after learning about it online. This suggests that the Internet may be a more powerful method of motivating patients than traditional media.

Other Cybercitizen Health findings include:

* 12.3 million online health info users currently take prescription drugs

* 10 million U.S. adults seek pharmaceutical content online

* 62 percent of online health info users trust online health information when the "site isn't trying to sell anything"
