* $1.6 million contract from NIAID for the production of novel forms of the HIV envelope protein as candidate HIV vaccines. This contract is intended to advance the Company's and NIAID's ongoing efforts to develop a safe and effective vaccine against HIV infection.
* A $600,000 grant for the examination of new approaches to HIV vaccine design based on the HIV co-receptor, CCR5. This is one of the first grants awarded under NIAID's newly implemented "INNOVATION Grant Program for Approaches in HIV Vaccine Research." The CCR5 co-receptor mediates the fusion and entry of HIV into target cells. Scientists from Progenics and the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center, New York City (ADARC), reported the discovery of the CCR5 co-receptor in the journal Nature in June 1996.
* A $388,000 grant under Phase II of the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program for the continued development of PRO 367, a radiolabeled therapeutic agent for HIV infection.
* A $357,000 subcontract under a grant awarded to the ADARC provides for Progenics' continued studies of the role of the CCR5 co-receptor in HIV entry and infection.
* A $18,000 grant under Phase I of the SBIR Program for the development of HIV-1 therapeutic compounds that target the CCR5 co-receptor.
"NIAID's continued funding of the Company's HIV programs supports our efforts to develop innovative products for HIV infection," said Paul J. Maddon, M.D., Ph.D., Progenics' Chairman and CEO. To date, the Company has been awarded 12 grants or contracts from NIAID and the Department of Defense totaling $5.4 million.
