Pediatric AIDS Foundation Supports New Pediatric HIV/AIDS Treatment Guidelines; Guidelines For the Use of Antiretroviral Agents in Pediatric HIV Infection

PR Newswire, 810 Seventh Avenue, New York, NY 10019 - Monday September 29 10:28 AM EDT

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pediatric AIDS Foundation applauds the new treatment guidelines which will be posted in the Federal Register for public comment. The organization is now urging that more aggressive guidelines be established as soon as new data becomes available.

Following the release of adult treatment guidelines, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the National Pediatric and Family HIV Resource Center and the Health Resources and Service Administration reconvened a Working Group on Antiretroviral Therapy of Children with HIV to provide pediatric guidelines in concert with recommendations for adults. Pediatric AIDS Foundation Scientific Director, Cathy Wilfert participated in formulating these guidelines and urged for both the adult and pediatric guidelines to be published simultaneously.

Due to the lack of trial data in young children, the pediatric guidelines include notes of caution when administering protease inhibitors to patients, unlike the guidelines for adults which are based on more extensive clinical testing. Protease inhibitors were only approved for use in children ages 2-12 last March. There still isn't a protease inhibitor for use in children under the age of 2.

"We are glad that these guidelines provide the tools that are urgently needed to bring kids into modern therapy," said Susan DeLaurentis, co-founder of the Pediatric AIDS Foundation. "This disease works faster and is more deadly in children than adults and we look forward to seeing updated, more aggressive guidelines."

The White House has proposed a new FDA regulation requiring pharmaceutical companies to conduct pediatric and adult trials simultaneously for new drugs. This regulation will eliminate the current discrepancy between the treatment of adults and children infected with HIV.

The Pediatric AIDS Foundation is the leading national non-profit organization dedicated to identifying, funding and conducting basic pediatric AIDS research. The Foundation's goals include reducing transmission from an HIV-infected mother to her newborn, prolonging and improving the lives of children living with HIV, eliminating HIV in infected children and promoting awareness and compassion about HIV/AIDS.
