Veterans with HIV infection receive care in a number of VA settings, including specialty and primary care outpatient clinics, inpatient units, home-based hospital care and hospice settings. The department also has four AIDS clinical units serving as models for innovative delivery of services and treatment at VA medical centers in New York, Miami, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Since reporting began in 1983 when VA treated 61 AIDS patients, more than 25,000 veterans with AIDS have received physical, mental and emotional support through VA's health care system.
VA also is engaged in the entire spectrum of AIDS research -- from basic science studies of the mechanisms of the AIDS virus infection through clinical trials in AIDS treatment in which VA patients elect to participate. The department's nationwide computer system allows assessment of at-risk groups, analysis of demographic data and long-term follow-up.
VA currently is funding AIDS-related research projects totaling $6.5 million. In addition, VA investigators received more than $25 million in the last fiscal year from non-VA sources to conduct additional studies. The department funds four specialized centers on AIDS and HIV research at VA hospital in Durham, N.C.; San Diego; New York; and Atlanta.
