'Linda's Meals': the Home Delivered Meals Program of AIDS Partnership Michigan

PR Newswire, 810 Seventh Avenue, New York, NY 10019 - Monday, 4 November 1996.

DETROIT, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- AIDS Partnership Michigan is pleased to announce the launch of Michigan's first hot-meal home delivery program for homebound people with AIDS.

The program, which began delivering meals on Monday, October 21, 1996, will initially focus on the areas of metro Detroit with the highest concentration of people with HIV/AIDS. Delivery routes will serve a limited number of clients in Detroit and southern Oakland County. More routes will be added at a later date.

Home delivered meals will contribute to individual health, not only by providing a consistent and nutritious diet, but also by enabling medications to function properly within the client's system. Clients can anticipate hot, freshly prepared meals that give them strength to meet the day and will receive the comfort of knowing that someone who cares brings good food and a friendly hello. Volunteers from AIDS Partnership Michigan deliver the meals.

The meals will be prepared daily in the kitchen of Restoration Towers, a senior citizen complex in Detroit managed by Paragon Management. Restoration Towers brings extensive experience in producing meals for sick and frail people and are acknowledged as leaders in the field.

Funding for the AIDS Partnership Michigan Home Delivered Meals Program is provided by grants from the Michigan AIDS Fund and the Detroit Health Department, Grantee for Ryan White Title I funds through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Detroit is one of the last large metropolitan areas in the United States to begin a home delivered hot-meal service for people with AIDS. Agencies in Los Angeles serve 1,500 meals per day, New York 2,000 meals per day, Chicago over 1,000 and Atlanta 1,100 meals per day.
