Dallas Nonprofit Wins National Housing Award

PR Newswire, Thursday December 5 1996 - 9:27 AM EDT

MIAMI, Dec. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- AIDS Services of Dallas, a Dallas nonprofit housing developer, is among six community-based nonprofits to receive the first Metropolitan Life Foundation Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing in the category of supportive housing.

The $15,000 award, will be presented at The Enterprise Foundation's Network Conference in Miami, Florida on December 6, 1996, recognizes the Dallas organization's outstanding achievements in the category of supportive housing. AIDS Services of Dallas' Ewing Center development was cited in the award for its excellence in developing housing that links residents with appropriate supportive services. The 115-unit development at 800 North Lancaster Avenue serves low-income individuals and families living with symptomatic HIV/AIDS.

"The Enterprise Foundation is proud to play a part in this national awards program, which is designed to reward and promote the vital role community- based nonprofit organizations play in strengthening their communities by improving the quality of life for low-income people with special needs," said Bart Harvey, Chairman and CEO of The Enterprise Foundation.

The Enterprise Foundation, with funding from Metropolitan Life Foundation, launched the Awards for Excellence in Affordable Housing program to recognize the important work being done by community-based organizations that own, develop and operate affordable housing. The program is aimed at improving the management of affordable housing; encouraging resident participation; recognizing the value of housing as a financial asset base for the group; showcasing and more widely disseminating model supportive housing and property management programs; and providing unrestricted financial support to further the important work of the organizations recognized.

Sibyl Jacobson, President and CEO of Metropolitan Life Foundation, said, "MetLife owns property nationwide, so we appreciate the value of sound property management. Through the Foundation, we have also come to recognize the important role that supportive housing plays in helping the homeless, the elderly and others live independently. We are pleased to provide unrestricted financial support to six groups doing outstanding work in these areas and hope other groups learn from their exemplary projects."

Two other winners in the category of supportive housing were: A Community of Friends in Los Angeles, which was awarded $25,000 for its Selby Hotel development; and Columbus Housing Partnership, which was awarded $10,000 for the Emerald Glen Apartments. The three winners in the property and asset management category were: Mercy Charities Housing California of San Francisco, CA, which was awarded $25,000 for its 111 Jones Street development; the Lakefront SRO of Chicago, IL, which was awarded $15,000 for its Carlton Terrace Apartments; and the Low Income Housing Institute of Seattle, WA, which was awarded $10,000 for its Arion Court development.

Metropolitan Life Foundation, which was established by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in 1976, supports various education, health and welfare, and civic and cultural organizations across the country. MetLife and Metropolitan Life Foundation have supported The Enterprise Foundation's activities with grants and loans in excess of $5.2 million.

The Enterprise Foundation, a national nonprofit organization launched in 1982 by Jim and Patty Rouse, works with more than 700 locally based nonprofit organizations across the country to develop decent, affordable homes for low-income people, and help people move up and out of poverty into the mainstream of American life. To date, Enterprise has raised and committed more than $1.8 billion in loans, grants and equity for the development of more than 61,000 homes. SOURCE The Enterprise Foundation
