The idea for the software came from PATH's colleagues in Indonesia, a predominantly Muslim country, where explicit condom use images were thought to be inappropriate for some settings. They asked for a cartoon to use in those situations. The animation has been very well received, but since it cannot teach details about condom use such as how to open the package without tearing the condom and how to dispose of used condoms, the other two options were included along with the cartoon.
"How to Use A Condom Correctly" is part of a suite of PATH AIDS prevention software that also includes "RiskAdvisor" -- an innovative tool to help counselors and clients better understand the links between personal behaviors and risk of exposure to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections -- and "RiskTeacher" -- a less explicit teaching aid.
All three programs are being used in the United States, Canada, and in developing countries. Evaluations show that both counselors and clients like the software, that clients tend to have faith in the messages they see on the computer, and that they are more honest in their answers to sensitive questions when responding to a "computer counselor," even when a human counselor is in the room.
