"We at Planned Parenthood know better than anyone the importance of preventive health services directed at low-income families and adolescents," Feldt said. "This nation annually spends at least $10 billion, not including costs associated with HIV/AIDS, on STIs, yet we only spend $1 in prevention for every $43 spent on treatment and other costs. This report is a call to action for all of us."
STIs not including HIV, lead to thousands of deaths every year and can cause cancer and other serious health problems. Up to 150,000 women become infertile and 45,000 experience life endangering ectopic pregnancies each year as a result of an STI infection.
The study argued that effective prevention requires greater responsibility on the part of health plans to integrate treatment and prevention of STIs into mainstream primary care and to direct preventive education and services toward adolescents.
"And that's where Planned Parenthood comes in," explained Feldt. "We've been providing the high-quality, confidential education and services necessary to prevent the spread of STIs for 80 years, but the kind of effort needed to win this battle requires greater access to information and funding. We especially need to reach out to teens and adults with messages of prevention and factual, honest information to help them make healthy decisions."
