Public Health Community Calls on President Clinton and 105th Congress to Support the HIV/AIDS Agenda; During American Public Health Association Conference in New York City

WHO: Dr. Scmakula Kiwanuka, Ambassador of Uganda to the United Nations, Dr. Helen Gayle, Director of the Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Umberto Cruz, Director of the Division of HIV Health and Community Services at the AIDS Institute, and Ronald Johnson, Coordinator for AIDS Policy for the New York City Mayor's Office.

These individuals will join the American Association for World Health (AAWH), the American Public Health Association (APHA), and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), in conjunction with NY State Dept. of Health, the NY City Dept. of Health, Beth Israel Medical Center, NY State HIV Prevention Planning Group, NY State AIDS Advisory Council, the Brownsville Youth Counsel, Inc., Columbia Univ. School of Public Health, Bedford Stuyvesant Family Health Center, and the Staten Island HIV network, are sponsoring the ninth annual World AIDS Day 1996 National Program, focusing on the 1996 theme:

One World, One Hope

WHAT: This UNAIDS theme for World AIDS Day 1996, which fall.,; on December 1, is designed to emphasize the reality that HIV/AIDS knows no borders, for it affects us all. Globally, about 21 million adults and over 800 thousand children are currently living with HIV and 2 million are currently diagnosed with AIDS. The global community must focus on educating citizens on HIV/AIDS, caring for those infected, developing a strong support system, and finding the means to cure HIV/AIDS.

WHEN: Tuesday, November 19, 1996, 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

WHERE: New York Hilton, Trianon Ballroom, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, New York City

WHY: AAWH has chosen the national APHA conference to launch World AIDS Day 1996, APHA and AAWH have joined their voices in urging President Clinton and the 105th Congress to increase support for HIV/AIDS programs. At the national conference, participants will sign a large Thanksgiving card to the President and postcards to the new U.S. Congress, calling for action on behalf of HIV/AIDS funding for prevention, research and programs.
