"By State law every couple has to take this training before they marry. Because much of the session is devoted to AIDS education, we thought this would be a good way to mark World AIDS Day," says Fay Flowers, Director of Health and Community Outreach for the chapter.
The course, which usually costs $12 per person, will be held at Red Cross headquarters at 100 Mack Avenue (at Woodward), Friday, December 1, 6-7 p.m.
Other participants can attend the class at half price -- $6 per person.
World AIDS Day is sponsored by the World Health Organization. December 1 has been designated by 190 countries around the world to draw public attention to the AIDS pandemic. According to the Michigan Department of Public Health, there are currently 11,500 persons infected with HIV in Michigan, 3,000 of whom have AIDS. There have been 4,200 deaths from AIDS in the state since 1981, and the death rate continues to rise. Jim Kent, HIV Epidemiologist at the Michigan Department of Public Health, says 700-800 people will die of AIDS in Michigan this year, up from 543 in 1992, and 693 in 1994.
