FEBRUARY REVIEW, OR WHAT WENT ON IN OUR WORLD....

AEGiS News Service - March 3, 2004
Elizabeth Canepa

The month of February proved to be a time of great accomplishment and great challenge for us here at AEGiS.

The worst occurred on the 21st, when water from a series of heavy rains, managed to get into the cable supplying our T1 connection to the Internet. It took MCI nearly six hours to get us back on-line. Later that same day, the alarm sounded on one of our new servers, signaling a hard drive had failed. The emergency spare kicked in, but the rebuild failed when the emergency spare also failed. We were able to locate replacement drives the next day, and were able to rebuild the array without the loss of any data. Whew!!!

On the positive side, the staff succeeded in completing the upload of conference abstracts from the 9th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections, 2nd IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis and Treatment, 5th International Workshop on Adverse Drug Reactions and Lipodystrophy in HIV, and the 6th Int'l Congress Drug Therapy in HIV Infection. The staff also uploaded slightly over 2,000 new news articles to the database.

From the beginning, our goal has been to make both current and historical information regarding HIV/AIDS easily accessible and free of charge. However, we need your help if we are to accomplish these goals throughout the coming decade.

Since January 1, 2004, over two million visitors have relied on AEGiS for their clinical information and news. Of these 2,000,000+ visitors, six people responded to our appeals for donations, donating $35.00 in January, and $315 in February. We are grateful to those who responded to our new donations campaign.

The grant money we receive can seldom be used for equipment or facilities. In addition to the drama with water damage and hard drive failure, we are in dire need of finding a new home. In our current location we have not only run out of space, we've stretched the electrical supply to its limits. This is another reason your support is so important now.

We've partnered with Groundspring, to provide more options to our visitors when donating by credit card and have placed DONATE NOW buttons on each page, to make donating easier.

Finally, we renewed our affiliate status with Amazon.com, the largest on-line store on the web. Buying from Amazon can save you up to 40% on your purchases, and Amazon.com will contribute to AEGiS each time you make a purchase if you use the link on our home page!

With the number of new infections increasing daily in the U.S. and throughout the world, we need your help in continuing to make accessible as much information as possible to the Global HIV/AIDS community.

Your tax deductible donations can now be made by PUSHING (OUR BUTTON), or sending a check payable to AEGiS, to:
