AWARDS, HONORS, AND AN APPEAL

AEGiS News - September 26, 2003
Elizabeth Canepa

As summer comes to a close, I would like to share with you some of the wonderful honors and attention that AEGiS has garnered.

Our summer started out on a high note with Sr. Mary Elizabeth being honored by amfAR. The fourth Honoring with Pride benefit dinner took place on June 2, 2003 in New York. amfAR "Awards of Courage" were presented to each of the evening's honorees: Harvey Fierstein, Tony award-winning actor and Playwright and star of Hairspray on Broadway; Dan Osheyack, Associate Publisher of People magazine; and our own Sister Mary Elizabeth, founder of AEGiS.

One of the most moving moments of the evening was when Larry Kramer praised the inspirational work of Sister Mary Elizabeth for developing and, with her small, dedicated staff, maintaining the most comprehensive online resource on HIV/AIDS.

Most recently, Sister Mary Elizabeth was honored with the 2003 Jonathan Mann Health Human Rights Award by the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care (IAPAC) at the 2003 Honoring Our Heroes tribute dinner on Monday September 15, 2003, in Chicago. The honor, as stated by José M. Zuniga, President/CEO of IAPAC, was in recognition of "the outstanding contributions made through AEGiS to improve global understanding of HIV/AIDS, which in turn contributes toward better care, and support for countless men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS."

Other honorees were Stephen Lewis, United Nations Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, who also received the Jonathan Mann Health Human Rights Award. The Hero in Medicine Award went to James McIntyre, Co-Director, Perinatal HIV Research Unit Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital Soweto, South Africa and Peter Mugyenyi, Head, Joint Clinical Research Center, Kampala, Uganda.

There were two Corporate Leadership Awards to Medicus Toronto and Pfizer, Inc.

Sister Mary Elizabeth and the entire AEGiS Staff and Board of Directors are thrilled about the recognition that has come our way, not because of ego, but rather, because it means that AEGiS' work and efforts will continue to be expanded to an ever-widening group of people, who need the free service that AEGiS provides.

This recognition is wonderful. However, our work at AEGiS is far from over. There is no "finish line" in sight with the AIDS Pandemic. With all of these honors comes realization that we need to add to our small, dedicated staff in order that we can strive to meet our commitment to archiving the information from AIDS conferences around the world.

Therefore, we are turning to you who read and use our website for help in this endeavor.

The editing and abstracting of conference material is tedious and very time consuming. We know that this is a necessary endeavor to save all possible information regarding the HIV/AIDS pandemic for future generations.

This is not a glamorous appeal that will necessarily garner big donors who want to help. But it is extremely important work, which is entirely in keeping with our mission to chronicle the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

With your help we can save these critical documents and still continue disseminating the important daily information that people around the world depend on for the treatment and care of people living with HIV/AIDS. Your part in this effort would be your important one-time or regular donation of $10.00, $25.00, $50.00 or MORE, to help us on our mission.
