JOHANNESBURG, 25 November (PLUSNEWS) - Italy on Thursday earmarked a further US $153 million to help fight AIDS around the world, a key member of the country's Foreign Affairs Committee announced on Thursday.
Addressing a conference discussing Italian initiatives planned for World AIDS Day on 1 December, Valdo Spini said the cash would be channelled through the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria early next year.
"This marks a fundamental contribution to fighting and preventing an epidemic that shows no signs of slowing down. Everyone must take a stand in the face of this global emergency. The alarm must be sounded louder in Italy as well," Spini was quoted by the local ANSA news agency as saying.
Stressing the need for expanded global prevention and treatment efforts, Spini underlined that cash alone was not enough when part of the problem was "people dying from AIDS and transmitting the virus".
