JOHANNESBURG, 23 November (PLUSNEWS) - South Africa's government has said it is impressed by the efforts of local sport personalities who have used their celebrity status to fight against HIV/AIDS.
Launching the fourth annual Sports Heroes Walk Against HIV and AIDS in Johannesburg on Tuesday, Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said it was commendable how people in the sports world were using their fame, success and power to heal other people.
"Many people look up to their sports heroes as symbols of national pride and unity, and therefore they are inspired and encouraged when they see them playing important roles in the struggle to create awareness about HIV and AIDS..." the official BuaNews agency quoted Mlambo-Ngcuka as saying.
Since its inception more than three years ago, the Sport Heroes Walk had donated funds to various hospices and home-based care centres that catered for HIV-positive people.
