Of this amount, Rwanda would get $397,846 through the international NGO CARE, the CARE country representative, Anne Morris, told IRIN on Tuesday. The project is called REACH, or Rapid and Effective Action Combating HIV/AIDS. Morris said in Rwanda USAID would collaborate with three community-based bodies, and one local NGO working in the field of HIV/AIDS in Gitarama Prefecture.
"We will build the capacity of these organisations to provide prevention, care and support services to their constituents," she said.
In its effort to build capacity, she added, USAID would also include sub-grants to these organisations so they could implement their activities.
The grant was the first to be issued under a new programme designed to channel support to locally based groups providing the sick with direct services, USAID said. The project started on 15 July, and activities have begun.
