Integrated Regional Information Networks - December 12, 2001
This new undertaking was the outcome of a donor's roundtable for Burundi held in Geneva 6-7 December 2002. The participants, from 16 industrialised nations and 20 international organisations, reviewed the implementation of commitments made to help Burundi at the Paris conference.
They also reviewed ways to reduce Burundi's external debt and discussed the national plan to fight HIV/AIDS. Several delegations announced their intention to give direct support to the HIV/AIDS programme. Alternatively, there were delegations that promised to contribute to a proposed multilateral debt-reduction fund for Burundi, while others announced measures to reduce or write off the country's bilateral debts.
The participants in Geneva agreed to convene a technical meeting in the first half of 2002 to examine the Burundi government's plan for the war on poverty. A separate meeting will then be organised near the end of next year to review the entire situation of the country and its priority issues.
