UNAIDS Launches Congo-Oubagui-Chari River Initiative

UN Integrated Regional Information Networks - September 10, 2001

UNAIDS has announced the launch of an initiative for the four countries through which the Congo, Oubangui and Chari rivers flow - namely the Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, the DRC and Chad - to reduce the number of HIV/AIDS and sexually-transmitted infections (STIs) as well as the socio-economic impact of the epidemic in the subregion by "promoting collaboration and setting up interventions generating added value to countries efforts."

According to a statement from UNAIDS, the initiative was launched 28 August by UNAIDS Executive Director Dr Peter Piot in the presence of the four countries' ministers of health and transport as part of the International Partnership Against AIDS in Africa (more information on the Partnership and related issues is available at www.unaids.org/africapartnership/html).
