Integrated Regional Information Networks - September 12, 2000
The President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Astrid Heiberg, said there was need to step up the fight against HIV/AIDS given the devastating effect the pandemic had on societies, an IFRC source told IRIN.
Some 500 delegates and observers from most of the 53 African Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, along with about 40 international and regional organisations, are attending the conference.
The meeting is scheduled to end on 25 September with the adoption of the African Red Cross Red Crescent Health Initiative, a 10-year programme that focuses on pressing public health issues in Africa such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, malnutrition and vaccine-preventable diseases.
