Recent Developments in Government Health Insurance: The Healthcare Safety Net for People Living with HIV/AIDS

AIDS & Public Policy Journal 19, no. 1/2 (Spring/Summer 2004) 5-10
Randolph T. Boyle, and Ronda B. Goldfein

Recent changes and threats to public health insurance programs will pose challenges to adequate healthcare for people living with HIV/AIDS. Attempts to undermine the Medicaid program and the problematic addition of a prescription drug benefit to the Medicare program may reduce coverage options for people living with HIV/AIDS. Meanwhile, regulatory changes defining "HIV specialists" in California potentially could improve care for people living with HIV/AIDS who obtain their healthcare from managed-care plans.
