To generate research about the provision of care and services for young people affected by HIV/AIDS, the Special Projects of National Significance (SPNS) Program of the HIV/AIDS Bureau in the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) funded a group of adolescent-focused projects in 1993. At the end of 1998, nine projects had completed five years of health services research and collaboratively developed specific policy recommendations regarding the care of adolescents who are HIV positive or at risk. These are delineated in this article. A detailed description of each project and its implementing organization, as well as a consensus model for adolescent-targeted HIV/AIDS services, have been published elsewhere.
