Cost and Financing of Hospital Care for Persons with AIDS in Texas

AIDS & Public Policy Journal 5, no. 2 (Spring 1990): 59-63
Charles E. Begley and Elizabeth A. Hintz

Given the limited funding available and the geographic diversity of the AIDS population, is there a difference in the organization and financing of AIDS care between Texas and other states? This article provides information on this question obtained from a statewide hospital survey conducted in the summer of 1988 by the National Public Health and Hospital Institute (NPHHI). The survey was part of a larger study on the economic impact of AIDS sponsored by the Texas Legislative Task Force on AIDS. Information on the distribution and characteristics of AIDS patients, their utilization of hospital services, and the cost and financing of hospital services was collected from 69 hospitals located in 39 cities. Following a brief description of the survey methods, the results are presented and compared with similar data from NPHHI's national hospital survey.
