History

A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Its paramount political problem continues to be the relationship of the province of Quebec, with its French-speaking residents and unique culture, to the remainder of the country.

Global Surveillance of HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is a joint effort of WHO and UNAIDS. The UNAIDS/WHO Working Group on Global HIV/AIDS and STI Surveillance, initiated in November 1996, guides respective activities. The primary objective of the working group is to strengthen national, regional and global structures and networks for improved monitoring and surveillance of HIV/AIDS and STIs. For this purpose, the working group collaborates closely with national AIDS programmes and a number of national and international experts and institutions. The goal of this collaboration is to compile the best information available and to improve the quality of data needed for informed decision-making and planning at national, regional and global levels. The Epidemiological Fact Sheets are one of the products of this close and fruitful collaboration across the globe.

World Fact Book
The Factbook was created as an annual summary and update to the encyclopedic NIS studies. The first classified Factbook was published in August 1962, and the first unclassified version was published in June 1971. The 1975 Factbook was the first to be made available to the public with sales through the US Government Printing Office (GPO).

US Department of State - Travel Advisory

ACCM is a volunteer-based community organization working to enhance the quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS, to prevent HIV transmission, and to promote community awareness and action. We recognize these roots by ensuring access to all of our programs, services and activities in English while increasing access in French.

AIDS Vancouver
AIDS Vancouver exists to alleviate individual and collective vulnerability to HIV and AIDS through care and support, education, advocacy and research.

Asian Society for the Intervention of AIDS
The Asian Society for the Intervention of AIDS is committed to creating healthy communities. We come together to improve the capacity of our communities to understand issues around HIV/AIDS and to provide support for members in our communities affected by the virus. HIV/AIDS is a complex disease that impacts our communities in many different ways. ASIA meets the challenge by addressing the emotional, social, political, economical and medical circumstances of our communities.

The B.C. Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS
The B.C. Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS provides education to health care providers, conducts natural history and observational studies, develops innovative laboratory tests, and carries out clinical trials. Its drug program is at the core of the Centre's activities. HIV-positive persons living in the Province of British Columbia receive their antiretroviral drugs free of charge when in enrolled in this program. The Centre is fully supported by the B.C. Ministry of Health.

British Columbia Persons With AIDS Society
The British Columbia Persons With AIDS Society (BCPWA) is dedicated to empowering persons living with HIV disease and AIDS through mutual support and collective action. It is Western Canada's largest AIDS organization with a membership more than 3,600 HIV + individuals. Unique among major HIV/AIDS agencies in Canada, BCPWA's Board of Directors is composed entirely of HIV+ members. The Society provides support and advocacy services, treatment information and volunteer opportunities for its many diverse members.

Canadian HIV Trials Network
The Canadian HIV Trials Network (CTN) is an innovative partnership of clinical investigators, physicians, nurses, people living with HIV/AIDS, pharmaceutical manufacturers and others that facilitates HIV/AIDS clinical trials of the highest scientific and ethical standards.

Healing Our Spirit B.C. Aboriginal HIV/AIDS Society
The mandate of Healing Our Spirit is to prevent and reduce the spread of HIV and AIDS and provide care and support services to Aboriginal peoples infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.

Oak Tree Clinic
The Oak Tree Clinic, the Women and Family HIV Centre for British Columbia provides specialized HIV care for infected women, pregnant women, partners, children and youth, and support services for affected families.

Women and AIDS Virtual Education (WAVE)
WAVE provides online information and resources to healthcare educators and professionals in order to help you support women living with HIV in your communities.

Working to Empower
Working to Empower is a non-profit and non-governmental organization working to empower sustainable, community-based change. Focused mainly upon HIV/AIDS education, WTE works in additional areas so as to counter-act the negative effects felt within society. Other approaches include providing school fees for orphans and income generating projects for the most vulnerable of society.

Youth Community Outreach (YouthCO)
Youth Community Outreach AIDS Society is a nonprofit organization working to involve youth ages 14-29 from all communities in addressing HIV/AIDS-related issues.

CATIE - Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange
CATIE is a national, not-for-profit charity committed to improving the health and quality of life of all people living with HIV/AIDS in Canada. We serve people living with HIV/AIDS and the people and organizations that support them by providing accessible, accurate, unbiased and timely treatment information. We work in partnership with a network of other information providers to ensure that people have access to the information they need, in the form they desire, to make informed health care choices.

The Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research
CANFAR is a national charitable foundation created to raise awareness in order to generate funds for research into all aspects of HIV infection and AIDS. The role of CANFAR is to fund institution-based AIDS researchers at educational, hospital and health facilities, research institutes, and established community service organizations in Canada.
