History

The former French Cameroon and part of British Cameroon merged in 1961 to form the present country. Cameroon has generally enjoyed stability, which has permitted the development of agriculture, roads, and railways, as well as a petroleum industry. Despite movement toward democratic reform, political power remains firmly in the hands of an ethnic oligarchy.

UNAIDS Epidemiological
Fact Sheets

[English] [French]

Global Surveillance of HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is a joint effort of WHO and UNAIDS. The UNAIDS/WHO Working Group on Global HIV/AIDS and STI Surveillance, initiated in November 1996, guides respective activities. The primary objective of the working group is to strengthen national, regional and global structures and networks for improved monitoring and surveillance of HIV/AIDS and STIs. For this purpose, the working group collaborates closely with national AIDS programmes and a number of national and international experts and institutions. The goal of this collaboration is to compile the best information available and to improve the quality of data needed for informed decision-making and planning at national, regional and global levels. The Epidemiological Fact Sheets are one of the products of this close and fruitful collaboration across the globe.

UNDP's Role in the Fight Against HIV/AIDS
AIDS is devastating in terms of creating and deepening poverty, reversing achievements in education, and diverting meager health budgets away from other priorities. And by cutting deepinto all sectors of society, HIV/AIDS undermines vital economic growth-perhaps reducingfuture GDP in Africa by a third over the next 20 years.
The Association for Creative Teaching and Women and Youth in Development
Women and youths in Cameroon working to educate their communities about HIV/AIDS. Under the leadership of Wendy Bernadette Losha, the members of ACTWID conduct educational outreach programs in 93 different villages. They have developed plays that present AIDS information in a way that is easily accessible to a general audience.
Adolescent Sexual Health
Young people are at high risk of HIV/sexually transmitted infections (STIs); experimentation is normal, sexual knowledge is limited, and information and other services that adolescents will and are able to use are incompletely developed.
