This plenary session will review the application of magnetic resonance (MR) techniques to examine the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes in humans, including: i). Basic principles of MR spectroscopy; ii). 13C MR studies to examine the regulation of muscle glycogen synthesis in healthy people and type 2 diabetic patients; iii). 31P MR studies to examine the rate controlling steps of insulin stimulated muscle glycogen synthesis in healthy people and type 2 diabetic patients; iv). 13C/1H and 31P MR Studies of the mechanism of insulin resistance in: lipodystrophy, normal aging and offspring of diabetic parents; v). the effect of weight loss on hepatic steatosis, hepatic insulin resistance and hyperglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes.
