ISSUES: China's estimated HIV/AIDS cases have increased to 840 thousands by end of last year. Rapid economic growth parallels with increasing of high-risk population (IDU, CSW) and frangible population for HIV/AIDS whose illegal unsaved behaviors or less educated situation need great care and intervention from NGO.
DESCRIPTION: Five programms found by 2003 government social mobilizing fund were carried out, targeting high risk population or frangible population in 5 cities and countryside of Beijing, Shanghai, Kaifeng, Manzhouli and Nanchang. Various training course were first given to the high-risk or frangible population both in penitentiaries, entertainment places and rural area, further choose the peer educators among them to conduct peer education and to scale up the intervention and care programme.
LESSONS LEARNED: Nearly 3000 CSWs, IDUs or family members of PLWHA were educated and 160 peer educators were trained. They were spontaneously educated their friends, their families in their owe way to spread the HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment knowledge to the most needed people.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Peer education is proved a useful way in conducting education and intervention in high-risk or frangible populations, to carry our education and intervention through NGO at their great gather places is a cost efficient way, which can train more people and more educators in short time and lsave the money.
